This past 4th of July weekend, America was on fire.

The long holiday weekend ended with a bang last night when the United States women’s national soccer team dominated Japan in the Women’s World Cup finals with a gold medal win-of-a-kind: no other country has lifted the Women’s World Cup three times (1991, 1999 and now, 2015). Once again, New York City has been buzzing about team USA. This time, the chatter is not concerned with the team’s controversial uniforms designed by Nike, but is focused mainly on one player in particular— Carli Lloyd. Of course, one of the most badass players to lead the USA to victory with 3 goals in the final game is from the tri-state area. While she’s a New Jersey native and a Rutgers Scarlet Knights product, her will power, determination, and attitude embodies the essence of a true New Yorker. Therefore, we obviously love her.

And then there’s New York native and legendary player Abby Wambach who showed the world that love always wins when she rushed to the stands to kiss her wife after winning the World Cup. Could there have been a better ending written for the U.S. in the finals? Not a chance.

Congrats to the U.S. women’s national soccer team on their victory, and to all New Yorkers who are beaming with joy and pride today. Not only do you live in the greatest city in the world, but now your country has the best women’s soccer team in the world. It’s a pretty great Monday to be an American.
